AEP Texas crews are ready to respond to potential power outages associated with Tropical Storm Bertha, which made landfall Thursday afternoon near the Texas-Louisiana border. Residual rain bands and wind from the storm are expected to continue moving along the Texas coastline and could affect customers in the Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi and Laredo districts over the next 24 hours.
Customers are encouraged to stay aware of the weather as the storm continues to move across the state.
AEP Texas reminds customers to keep the following safety tips in mind:
- Customers who depend on life-support systems or other electric-powered medical equipment should have a backup plan in place in case outages last longer than expected.
- Always assume downed power lines are energized and dangerous. Stay at least 10 feet away, and do not touch anything in contact with a line, including trees, fences or standing water. Keep children and pets away from affected areas after the storm.
- If using a portable generator, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and operate it only in a safe, well-ventilated area.
