AEP Texas partnered with Dyess Air Force Base to use drone technology to inspect overhead power lines for signs of potentially failing or failed equipment.

The project marked an important milestone for AEP Texas’ unmanned aircraft system program and required special security clearances to operate within the base’s highly regulated airspace. Dyess officials said it was the first civilian drone flight over the base.

The inspection helped identify potential issues with poles and power lines, supporting preventative maintenance efforts aimed at reducing unexpected outages and improving reliability across the base. The work will help Dyess sustain operations in support of its B-1 Long Range Strike Bombers and C-130 cargo aircraft.

AEP Texas said the partnership reflects its commitment to working with community partners and using advanced technology to support critical infrastructure needs.
