As of 4 p.m., approximately 210 AEP Texas customers were without power, with less than 100 outages in one district and less than 50 outages in the other four districts.  The number of outages likely will continue to go up and down as the winter storm continues over the next few days.   

We have made significant progress in responding to outages over the past 24 hours, especially in the western part of the AEP Texas service territory. Our restoration efforts will continue until power is restored to all customers whose homes or businesses are still capable of taking power. 

“Galloping” transmission lines caused by strong gusts “resulted in outages in the Abilene and San Angelo Districts. This occurs when freezing rain creates icicles on power lines.  High winds push the icicles and lift the lines creating a galloping or jumping motion.

• All power lines should be considered energized and dangerous.  Please report downed power lines by calling 1-866-223-8508. 
• If you use a portable generator, do not plug the generator into your circuit box. Portable generators “back-feed” electricity up the line and risk the lives of repair workers and the public. Plug appliances directly into the generator.  Also, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.  Make sure backup generators are located outside the home and away from open windows in order to prevent the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. 

• Icy roads and other inclement conditions can slow the restoration process.  You can view a real-time outage map, which will indicate if we are aware of your outage.  Please note that the estimated restoration times shown on the map are initial projections and can change.

• If you do lose power, please unplug or turn off your heating system, washers, dryers and other major appliances and electronic equipment like televisions and computers. Turn them on one at a time over a 15-20 minute period when power is restored.
