A two-day training session at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi brought together utility and fire professionals to sharpen awareness of the risks posed by overhead power lines. Focused on practical recognition and safe response techniques, the course gave firefighters clear, actionable guidance to protect themselves and the communities they serve.

Three Distribution System Supervisors Jesus Vasquez, Blake Reagan, and Jeffry Edgemon initiated the program after observing that some responders were unfamiliar with utility-specific hazards. “This training shows the firefighters what to look for and what to be aware of so they won’t become the second victim when it comes to any hazards they may encounter out in the field while responding to calls,” Vasquez said.

Building on the event’s success, the supervisors plan to extend the training to all Corpus Christi firefighters, reinforcing a shared commitment to safer, more coordinated emergency responses around power infrastructure.
