AEP Texas Restoration Update: West Texas Winter Storm -- 10-28-2020 – 10:30 a.m.

October 28, 2020

AEP Texas crews are continuing restoration efforts in response to a winter storm that began in parts of west Texas on Tuesday.

As of 10:30 a.m., approximately 14,400 customers remained without power within the Abilene District.  The highest concentration of outages is in the Childress area where approximately 5,200 customers do not have power.

Breakdown of Areas with the Most Outages and Preliminary Estimated Restoration Times

Area      Number of Customers Without Power    Estimated Restoration

Childress             5,200                                                9 p.m. today

Abilene               3,700                                                1 p.m. on Thursday

Vernon                2,300                                                9 p.m. on Thursday

Stamford            1,900                                                1 p.m. on Thursday

Hamlin                  900                                                 1 p.m. on Thursday

Cisco                    400                                                 1 p.m. on Thursday

These preliminary estimates may change as restoration efforts continue and are projections for restoration of service to most customers, who can take power. There are a significant number of individual outages that will have to be addressed on a one-to-one basis and will require additional time to restore service.

Melting ice could contribute to additional outages, as well as new challenges as the work continues.  A second contingent of additional crews from other parts of the AEP Texas service territory began arriving this morning to help.

AEP Texas crews worked throughout most of Tuesday night to address the initial round of outages on Monday.  However, around 11 p.m. loss of transmission service to the Childress area, as well as other new outages brought the total number of outages back up.
