AEP Texas crews make restoration progress in Alice following reported 90-mph winds; approximately 1,900 outages remain

May 9, 2025

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (May 9, 2025) – AEP Texas crews have made significant restoration progress throughout the day following last night’s severe weather. The most extensive damage occurred in Alice, where straight-line winds of up to 90 miles per hour were reported. These powerful winds destroyed critical infrastructure including at least 25 poles, and damaged key distribution lines and equipment.

As of 5 p.m., approximately 1,900 customers remain without power in the Alice area. Restoration efforts will continue throughout the night, with crews expecting to make significant progress.

Mutual assistance crews have joined local personnel to support restoration, and all teams are working as quickly and safely as possible to bring power back to customers.

AEP Texas urges customers to remain alert and follow these important safety guidelines:

  • Treat all downed power lines as energized and dangerous. Stay at least 10 feet away and do not attempt to move or touch anything in contact with the line.
  • Those relying on life support or critical medical equipment should maintain a backup power plan during extended outages.
  • Use portable generators according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Operate generators outdoors and away from windows to avoid carbon monoxide hazards.

AEP Texas will continue to provide updates as restoration progresses. For outage updates, safety information, and resources, visit aeptexas.com.
