AEP Texas Technician Averts Potential Catastrophe Through Vigilance

September 23, 2025

Mario Aguirre, Jr., an AEP Texas Distribution Operations Technician, recently demonstrated exceptional attention to detail while working in La Villa, Texas, preventing a potentially catastrophic explosion. While preparing to energize a voltage regulator, which is a device critical for maintaining stable voltage levels, Aguirre noticed an unusual rise in the regulator, signaling a serious issue.

“This was a very dangerous situation,” Aguirre explained. Had he not acted promptly, the regulator could have caused a catastrophic explosion, resulting in bodily harm and extensive damage. Recognizing the defect, he stopped the operation and contacted the Central Transformer Shop for additional support.

His commitment to safety not only ensured a secure work environment but also highlights the importance of vigilance in the field. Aguirre's proactive measures earned him recognition as the August Good Catch Winner from the Rio Grande Valley Safety Committee, serving as an important reminder of the shared responsibility to prioritize safety and protect both oneself and colleagues. “Safety is no accident,” he said, inspiring others to strive for zero harm in their work.
