What began as a conversation with an airman at Dyess Air Force Base has grown into an annual community event that gives active-duty airmen a Texas hunting experience at no cost. Launched by External Affairs Manager Luke B. Roberson, the Dyess Dove Hunt is now in its second year and provides guided dove hunts exclusively for service members stationed at Dyess.
This year’s event welcomed 90 airmen and relied on the generosity of local landowners, volunteer guides and community volunteers. AEP Texas hosted on-site registration and logistical support, where participants received field assignments, a briefing on hunting regulations from a Texas game warden, and remarks from local civic leaders.
The Dyess Dove Hunt highlights AEP Texas’ commitment to community partnership and volunteer service. The program operates without formal fundraising, relying instead on donated time and resources to remove cost barriers for service members. Organizers plan to collaborate with the local chamber to expand the program in future years, continuing to foster goodwill between the military and the community.
Speakers and volunteers included local officials and community partners such as Taylor County Judge Phil Crowley, Abilene City Councilman Blaise Regan, Congressman Jodey Arrington’s Field Rep. Michael Dean, the Vice President of the Military Affairs John Nichols, Maj General USAF, who's retired with the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, amongst others.
