How to save lighting your home

One of the easiest ways to save energy at home is installing more energy efficient light bulbs like light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. LEDs use nearly 75% less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs, and last more than 15 times longer.

Lighting can account for up to 20% of the average home’s electric usage. Over time, changing to LED bulbs can add up to major savings.

Energy-Saving Lighting Tips

  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR®-certified LEDs.
  • Turn off lights you’re not using.
  • Make the most of the natural light in your home.
  • Adjust lighting levels for different uses and times of the day.
  • Switch to LED lights for holiday decorations and outdoor security.
  • Install lighting controls like dimmers, timers, motion sensors, and photocells.
  • Use ENERGY STAR®-certified lamps and fixtures.
