AEP Texas awards $35,250 in FIRST robotics grants to teams across Texas

(CORPUS CHRISTI – MAY 2, 2018) – AEP Texas has awarded $35,250 in grants to robotics teams across the AEP Texas service territory as part of the AEP FIRST, FIRST Tech Challenge, FIRST LEGO League and Junior FIRST LEGO League robotics programs.

AEP’s FIRST robotics grant initiative is one of several company-wide programs to support Pre-kindergarten through grade 12 education with an emphasis on science, math, engineering and technology (STEM) education and careers.

“AEP Texas is aware of the need for strong STEM education programs,” said Judith E. Talavera, AEP Texas president and chief operating officer. “We are proud to help students and teachers alike through this FIRST robotics initiative because it promotes team work, provides first-hand experience in the areas of science and technology, and allows students to explore future career opportunities.”

AEP awarded funding to 137 FIRST robotics teams across its 11-state service territory for the 2018-19 competitive season. More information on all the FIRST robotics programs can be found at www.firstinspires.org.

About FIRST
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multi-national robotics competition that teams professionals and high school students to solve an engineering problem in an intense and competitive way. The brainchild of Dean Kamen, entrepreneur and inventor of the Segway gyroscopic personal electric scooter, FIRST competitions are high-tech spectator sporting events demonstrating participants’ success in brainstorming, teamwork and meeting deadlines.

About FIRST Tech Challenge
FIRST Tech Challenge, modeled after the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition for high school teams, uses a reusable robot kit designed for students in grades 7-12. FIRST Tech Challenge provides head-to-head competition using a sports model. Participants design, build and program robots, applying real-world math and science concepts and developing problem-solving, organizational and team-building skills.

About FIRST LEGO League
FIRST LEGO League, modeled after the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition for high school teams, is designed for students in grades 4-8. A partnership between the LEGO toy company and FIRST, FIRST LEGO League brings the excitement and rewards of science, math and technology learning using real-world context and hands-on experimentation that opens up career possibilities. The junior robotics competition is considered the “little league” of FIRST, a brainchild of Dean Kamen, entrepreneur and inventor of the Segway gyroscopic personal electric scooter.

About Junior FIRST LEGO League
Junior FIRST LEGO League is a program for students in grades K-3 modeled after the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition for high school teams. A partnership between the LEGO toy company and FIRST, Junior FIRST LEGO League focuses on building an interest in science in engineering in young students through hands-on activities designed to address a real-world challenge using research, critical thinking and imagination.
