INDIANA MICHIGAN POWER CUSTOMERS IN MICHIGAN
OFFERED NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO SAVE ENERGY,COSTS

March 29, 2010

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) has added two new programs to its compliment of energy savings initiatives rolled out to Michigan customers in late 2009. The Refrigerator/Freezer Recycling Rebate Program and a program featuring online home energy audits are the latest offerings designed to help customers in Michigan conserve electricity and reduce electric bills.

In October 2008, Public Act 295, known as the “Clean, Renewable and Efficient Energy Act,” was enacted in Michigan requiring all utilities in the state to implement energy optimization (EO) programs to promote energy efficiency and reduce energy use.EO programs now offered to I&M’s Michigan customers include:

  • Coupons for energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs)
  • Rebates on Energy Star clothes washers
  • Rebates on smart power strips
  • Rebates for energy efficient air-conditioning equipment
  • Energy assistance programs
  • Customized programs for commercial and industrial customers
  • Incentives for installing energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment for commercial and industrial customers
  • Rebates for recycled refrigerators and freezers
  • Online energy use audits

“Michigan’s energy optimization legislation complements our objectives to conserve energy, benefit the environment and reduce costs to both customers and the utility,” said Helen J. Murray, president and chief operating officer for Indiana Michigan Power. “Although participation in the programs offered by I&M is strictly voluntary, we believe customers will find the long-range savings and benefits to the environment are worthwhile goals.”

Indiana Michigan Power is a member of a consortium of eleven electric utilities known as Efficiency United that promotes and administers the EO programs. Information about the programs can be found at the Efficiency United website: http://www.efficiencyunited.com; the I&M website: https://www.indianamichiganpower.com; or by calling Efficiency United at 877-367-3191, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Similar energy optimization programs for I&M customers in Indiana will be available soon.
